Day to Day Itinerary

Bath is a designated World Heritage Site with stunning architecture and fabulous attractions. Highlights include Bath Abbey, the Royal Crescent and Circus, The Roman Baths and Pump Room, and the Jane Austen Museum.


This tour will take you through some of the most quintessentially English towns and villages. The market town of Bradford-on-Avon has a wonderful setting on the banks of the Kennet and Avon canal. The villages of Lacock and Castle Combe are both strong contenders for the title of prettiest village in England. Both are packed with history and character; highlights include the impressive 13th century Lacock Abbey and the Fox Talbot Museum and gallery in Lacock, along with the 14th century Market Cross and St Andrew’s Church in Castle Combe. Both villages have featured regularly as filming locations, most famous appearances include Downton Abbey, the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Steven Spielberg's War Horse, Stardust, and The Wolfman.


The walking routes fall nothing short of impressive either, as they lead along picturesque canals, rolling countryside, meadows, and the gorgeous By Brook Valley.

DAY ONE

Arrive in Bath

The first night is spent in Bath. Suggested start days are Sunday, Wednesday or Thursday, but any day is possible.
DAY TWO

Bath to Bradford-on-Avon
12.5 miles/20 km

Start from central Bath and walk to Sham Castle, with fine views of Bath. Walk over the Dundas Aqueduct to elegant Freshford, and along a quiet valley to Farleigh Hungerford with its fine 14th century castle. Then the route leads through Barton Farm, with its magnificent tithe barn, on to Bradford-on-Avon, one of the loveliest small towns in Britain, with picturesque 17th century bridge, a complete Saxon church, tiers of Georgian townhouses, and 16th century weavers cottages.
(This walk can be shortened by taking a bus to Limpley Stoke.)
DAY THREE

Bradford-on-Avon to Box
7.5 miles/12 km

From Bradford-on-Avon walk across rolling countryside to the picture-book village of Monkton Farleigh. Then to Kingswood with views of the Wiltshire Downs and Bath, and on to the handsome small town of Box. Taxi transfer to Lacock is provided to allow for an afternoon of exploring this picturesque English village with its Abbey and unspoilt charm.
DAY FOUR

Lacock to Castle Combe
11.75 miles/19 km

Pass through Corsham to join the picturesque By Brook Valley. Continue to Slaughterford and thence to Castle Combe, undoubtedly one of the prettiest villages in England, with its clear stream, ancient bridge and market place. Overnight in Castle Combe. You also have the option to return to Lacock for a second night and be transferred back the next morning if you prefer.
DAY FIVE

Castle Combe to Bath
13 or 17 miles/20.8 or 26.7 km

Head south back towards Bath, walking along the beautiful St. Catherine Valley to Batheaston, from where you have the choice of taking a bus into the centre of Bath or walking along the Avon to complete your journey. This walk can be shortened to 13 miles using an alternative route. This walk can also be shortened by travelling with the luggage vehicle or by adding an extra night in Marshfield which is approximately halfway.

Depart after breakfast.

Just wanted to let you know that we had a fantastic time on our walk and that we are already looking at your other walks trying to decide which one to do next! The notes were super accurate and easy to follow. The scariest part of the trip were the angry golfers! We met a walker that tried to tell us we were going the wrong way and, as we stopped to reread the notes and look at the map, we were getting angry gestures from golfers telling us we had to keep moving! The biggest obstacle was moving the whole herd of cows standing in front of one of the last gates before getting to Batheaston. We both agreed the cows gave us less fear than the angry golfers! Thank you for all of your help before the trip.

Bath was a little different, we got very lost so we called it a day and after about 10k called a taxi. We love to walk and to see the English countryside up close is one of the most rewarding ways to visit the UK. Each day was great in terms of variety, scenery and distance. We think it’s a good idea to end in Box on day two and see more of Lacock which is outstanding. We also loved Castle Combe and enjoyed our stay in the hotel a great deal.
